Thomas Dugdale Author / Editor of Curiosities of Great Britain (1835) which became England and Wales Delineated when republished in the 1840s. During the late 1700s and 1800s there were many gazetteer guides which attempted to describe the British Isles and many of these included maps and / or illustrations. Two good examples of this genre are the books published as monthly instalments by Fisher – Devonshire and Cornwall Illustrated – and by Jennings – Moore´s History of Devonshire – which both included a wealth of written material on the county/counties and included maps and, more importantly, engravings. Thomas Dugdale was possibly an amateur historian, genealogist, geographer and antiquarian and was mostly responsible for compiling the Curiosities of Great Britain . This work was first published in 1835 and included maps produced by the team of George Cole, artist and cartographer, and John Roper

FOR SALE I have a complete 11-volume set for sale. Complete set of Thomas Dugdale’s Curiosities of Great Britain or England and Wales Delineated Circa 1842-45 in eleven volumes. This example also includes as Volume XI: An Alphabetical Chronology of Remarkable Events by Leonard Townsend. Over 230 attractive steel-engraved views of England and Wales - sheet size 130 x 215 mm; views from 65 x 100 mm to 90 x 125 mm. 57 of 58 maps forming a complete atlas of England and Wales - 230 x 175 mm on sheet approx. 260 x 220 mm. History: Thomas Dugdale’s Curiosities of Great Britain or England and Wales Delineated first appeared circa 1835 with maps by Cole and Roper. This was published by John Tallis until Lucinda Tallis took over her husband’s business when he died; their son, John Tallis, published this work with her from c.1843. However, by this time Cole and Roper’s maps were progressively being replaced with maps in a similar style by Joshua Archer. Editions consisting of 4, 8, 9 and 11
